RESULTS: Thursday Night F1 League: Round 5 @ Catalunya - Spain

Saturday, May 11, 2013

A long break from the ‘flyaway’ rounds saw the teams return to Circuit de Catalunya for the first of the European circuits. Championship leader - Michael Gray, perhaps missing the flight, missed the start. Championship contenders, David Lord and Evan Golbach were given a chance to make up some lost ground.

Throughout practice, the game was to preserve the left front tyre, whilst taming a nasty rear snap through some of Barcelona’s high speed curves. David Lord and 2013 rookie Andrew Trent found themselves on the front row after qualifying, both in the 1:21’s.

The formation lap raised concern for impeding chaos to follow, when Scott McDonald ran into the back of another car. Cars all over the circuit required the red flag and the race officials restarted the race. The 2nd formation lap had Andrew spin, but he just made it back to the grid in time. Lights went out, and the 45 lap grand prix was “GO”!

Turn one remained clean. David on the outside, Andrew sticks with him and claims the inside of turn 3. Evan seized the resulting gap and took Dave on Turn 4. Racecentre rivals Matt Anderson and Scott mixed it up, the latter winning the first battle. By lap two Dave and Evan witnessed Andrew driving hard into the distance, both wanting to be the first man to hunt him down. They remain locked in combat down the front straight all the way to turn 3 … until … “CONTACT”! David would require a pit stop, but in doing so, ensured the fans he would put on a show from now. Not far behind, Shane Gilfeather threw his Toro Rosso down the inside of Matt, the Spanish fans going wild. However, it was too much excitement for Gilly to contain … hard on the gas and into the inside wall.

Andrew peels into the pits from the lead, lap 3. New leader - Scott does the same lap 6, handing the lead to Matt – tyre choice becoming a crucial factor. Scott makes full use of the stickier compound and snatches the lead back on lap 9. Andrew almost slips through too but loses the rear at the tight double left. Scott holds his lead to lap 16, pits, and then hands it back to Matt. David back up to 2nd, dispatches Matt after a short-lived fight and works on building an unattainable lead. Evan, after signs of awesome pace earlier, finds trouble soon, after his lap 24 pit stop. With a damaged car and spirit, he joins the crowd in the grandstand for a great view of the final laps.

From then, the focus was on driving to the various strategies. However, no amount of strategic thinking was enough to catch David. Like the Sebastian Vettel, he would not be satisfied with merely a race win. David craved a more-than-convincing fast lap for the record books, and bolted on some new soft tyres. Needless to say he was a second quicker than his quickest rival and merely playing games. Matt and Scott rounded out the podium. Although missing out on the Champagne, Andrew’s pace proved he can run with the best and could be one to watch when the drivers head to the testing Monte-Carlo circuit next.

David Lord has now taken the championship lead by one point over Michael Gray.
