RESULTS: Thursday Night F1 League: Round 4 @ Bahrain

Tuesday, April 23, 2013

Another short one week gap was all the teams had as the cars and crews were flown to the Middle East for the always controversial Bahrain Grand Prix. The Tilke designed circuit is loved by few and hated by many, however one cannot argue that it does provide excellent racing! With its long straights and mixture of fast and slow corners, car setup would prove to be crucial.

Team Racecentre, led by Matt Anderson took first blood by clinching pole position by a mere 0.29 seconds from Mark Kearon! In a close battle, the top-five qualifiers were separated by just 0.862 seconds! With this in mind, we were assured of some very close racing.

A clean, but closely bunched getaway from all drivers was a credit to the respect shown between the competitors. Anderson lost the lead to the hard charging Kearon who had done all that was required, but unfortunately had a spin on the first lap at turn three, pushing him to the back of the pack. The cause; cold tyres and too much throttle! Team Racecentre’s second driver (only by name, not by team order) Scott McDonald inherited the lead after passing Anderson into turn one. Never to be discounted, Michael Gray followed close behind in second. An uncharacteristic error from Gray a few laps later caused a minor spin at turn four which only inflicted a small amount of suspension damage. Unabated, Gray soldiered on in hunt for the leaders after a quick pit stop for tyres. Starting on the super-soft compound, McDonald was the first to enter the pits on a scheduled stop, four seconds later he left two black marks in his pit box in his urgency to get back to the front. Series front-runner, David Lord had climbed his way up to second position from fifth on the grid and found himself in an epic dice with Gray and Kearon. Lap after lap, second to fourth positions changed constantly until Kearon made the same mistake again and spun at turn one. Absolutely incensed with his mistake, Kearon fought hard to catch the two up again and whilst Gray and Lord ducked, dived and weaved around each other, Kearon seized the opportunity and stole second place from both of them! However, this was not the end of the ordeal between the three. Kearon pitted soon after, but was handed a drive-through penalty for exceeding the pit lane speed limit. He quickly served it and found himself exiting the pits (this time, at the right speed) with his old sparring partner, Lord. Side-by-side into turn one, a few corners later the two raced hard but close with Kearon taking the minor victory.

As the old saying goes, “it ain’t over, till it’s over” and this rang true lap thirty nine of the forty lap race. Initially, hearts were in mouths when McDonald spun whilst in third place which allowed Gray and Lord to catch right up, however it was Kearon that sent the crowd and the Racecentre staff into overdrive. Pushing his tyres to the absolute limit, with three corners to go, the rears both gave up and punctured, leaving the young Englishman stranded on the track. It was a cruel blow to an absolutely stellar drive. Meanwhile, Anderson crossed the line to take the chequered flag by over 48-seconds to McDonald.
