Originally planned for Lakeside, a virtual dust storm forced the promoters to move the event up state to the temporary Townsville Street Circuit. After a long drive up there the drivers were ready to race.
Qualify:
Continuing from his quick practice times Chris Naumovski the “One Lap Wonder” absolutely blitzed the field with the smooth driving style around this hectic course. The best of the rest was Allan Marks, Pat O’Reilly then Scott Durham. Jamie Scanlan posted the fastest top speed with 226.1km/h.
Race #1:
Jamie Scanlan Rolled. Pat started a bit messy, bumping a few people and dropped to the back. Enda bottle-necked the field from 3rd on down. Chris struggled to get past and launched himself into the barriers. Iain escaped Enda’s clutches in the final laps for a podium spot, Scott held 2nd and Allan took the first 1st win of the night.
Race #2:
Iain got bounced back to the rear. Shane made a break for the lead, Enda serving as a rear-gunner. Scott got squashed in the last corner from the ‘accordion effect’. Pat Picked his gaps and set off to hunt the leader down with no success as Shane streaked ahead into the distance to collect the Chequered, Pat 2nd and Allan Marks 3rd.
Race #3:
Chris showcased his early practice and qualifying pace and stormed to the lead. Allan jumped the start which earned himself a drive-thru penalty. Chris held off Pat and Shane for the win, and we witnessed the night’s points close tightly.
Race #4:
Allan benefited from the reverse grid up-front. Colin Sanders all the way from Canada proved he could run with the top guys, hanging out in 2nd. Scott and Shane battled close behind. Enda spun, followed by Pat (the current point’s leader). Shane aborted a pass at the last second which gave Iain a chance to slip through. Iain however bombed a certain 3rd when he spun dropping to 7th on the 2nd last lap. Scott in a comfortable position as he brings home 2nd after his early battles with Iain. Allan Marks Lead from start to finish with his clinical win. Shane home in 3rd.
Race #5:
With only 5 points separating the top 4 drivers it was likely that whoever would win this race would take the round honors. The green lights shone and Allan got pipped off the start by Scott into turn one and Shane tries to go round the outside, but Iain literally flew through the first corner. Witnesses on the scene mentioned Chris looking rather guilty through his helmet. Shane got clipped and lost the lead. Colin and Pat were in prime position to watch Allan and Scott duke it out hoping they would come together. Colin dropped off and it turned down to a battle of three. An optimistic move by Allan set-up a 3-wide display, giving Pat a temporary half car lead. Scott led a lap and then Allan made a move stick on the outside. At the end of lap 14, Allan placed his car on the inside of Pat, caught the inside kerb and hung on two wheels for what seemed like an eternity dropping back to 5th. Scott slipped through to second leaving Pat to defend the lead. Allan pressured Colin into a spin for 4th (no touching). Scott gave Pat one more love tap, but Pat took the win, race and round! Shane took the final podium spot.
