RESULTS: Golden Ticket Race "24Hr LeMans Race"

Thursday, June 20, 2013

The most famous endurance race in the world, marked by sportsmanship and quest for performance, has told an heroic chapter of automobile history since 1923. Last night history was again written as Racecentre hosted the Grand Event in the virtual world of sim driving. The real life race which has seen the most beautiful duels of manufacturers and drivers of the legend, will celebrate its 90th anniversary.

Competitors from both Gold Coast and Sydney came to race over the 2hour event. Some high speed straights and challenging chicanes was going to be hard to overcome but when night falls it will change the game completely. The drivers headed out for Qually and Iain Salteri was quietly confident of pole position as his private practice results was telling him that he had almost a 3 second advantage over the entire field. Regardless with a short Qualifying time of 10 mins no-one had any room to make too many mistakes if they wanted to see the front of the grid.

Andy Lardner, Steve Chesters and Rob Cooper where doing well from the Gold Coast as they were keeping the Sydney boys honest but it was the usual “Rat Pack” of David Lord, Michael Palladino and Iain Salteri who qualified up front with Iain taking pole.

It was a nervous start as everyone knew that to race over one and a half hours you were not going to win it into the first corner. Unfortunately a couple of drivers did not get a clean start when the green lights lit. While the top3 got off to a flyer it was newcomer Jarryd Bermingham who after the first lap claimed 4th position from P10 on the grid Jason Brooks was also hot on his tail to capitalise on the good fortunes. On Lap 3 however it is Jason Brooks and Marty Bennette dualing for 5th position. Jason trying to exit Marty’s slipstream hits the grass at high speed and spins it down the back straight. Fortunately he does not hit the fence and continues on.

Iain Salteri has now pulled an 8 second gap over David Lord in second. Andy Lardner is doing it tough as he had selected the Hard compound which was bound to degregate early due to the heat of the day and the high speed straights. This allowed Riann Cerfonteyn take his position as Andy spins a couple of times over the start/finish line.

Lap #7 and it is Jason Brooks who is one of the first ones into he pits for tyres and he also needed to replace the front nose cone costing him valuable time. Jarryd Bermingham is still comfortably in P4 just hitting his rhythm and staying out of trouble over a minute in front of his closest rivals. Lap #9 and the sun is starting to set over the French countryside while race leader Iain Salteri is trying to make his way through the field. Steve Chesters makes an early retirement due to damage to the car. Soon after David Lord fresh from a clean pit stop makes an uncharacteristic mistake and spins on the tight left hander. Un phased or damaged he continues on without losing P3. Michael Palladino makes his pit stop on L13 but will his 2nd set make it to the end? As Michael leaves Jarrayd enters for his first tyre change. Meanwhile Rob Cooper and Marty Bennette DNF due to mechanical damage. Flying the flag for the Gold Coast drivers is Team Owner Enda Murphy. Leaving a smoke trail that would attract the American Indians he is place in P5 just ahead of Jason Brooks.

Dawn now approaching and Iain has a commanding lead as he is over a minute ahead of Michael Palladino who has just reclaimed p2 from David Lord on old rubber. Enda’s good run was to come to an end as he was forced to retire due to suspension damage. With Iain lapping almost 3 seconds ahead of his nearest rivals and driving an almost faultless race he has taken out Racecentre’s 24Hr Le Mans race ,earning him a Golden Ticket into Racecentre’s Race To Reality competition giving him the chance to hopefully win a real race drive in an Aussie Race Car at Homebush later this year.

Stay tuned for our next Golden Ticket Race into the Race To Reality Final !!
