RESULTS - Race to Reality Heat #3 - iRacing 6.3.13 (Lime Rock Park)

Thursday, March 07, 2013

Heat #3 of the Race to Reality competition saw us head to Lime Rock Park for what was going to be a tight race on the short circuit. Not much room to overtake here so is anyone going to get desperate?

The guys all scabbled out of the pits at the start but gave each other room to put in some good flying laps. With Mitchell Abrahall setting fastest time practice all eyes were on him to throw out the challenge to Justin Ruggier and that's exactly what he did. Setting a blistering time of 58.227 Justin would have to fight hard to take pole. With 5 mins to go till the end of Qually Justin found himself on provisional pole with a 58.118 but not content with that he kept trying as he saw what times Mitchell was capable of. As the session finished Justin held to pole with Mitchell 2nd and Matthew E Hill in 3rd.

The Race:

Green flag dropped and everyone got off cleanly around turn one. Most drivers holding position for Lap 1. Lap 2 however was a different story, Guy leach had got a run on Phill Rockstroh coming into turn one but Guy and Phill came together causing Phill to hit the grass and Guy to limp back to the pits with a damaged rear suspension. Guy however was not to make it back as while trying to stay out of the way of other drivers he was again involved in a multi car pile up. Corey E Hanger had swurved to miss Guy but over corrected and lost control and collected Desmond Hallam,Robert Thomae unfortunately ended up on his roof, also involved was George Fullerton and Gavin Sadler.

While all attention was on the crash we missed Mitchell make the move on Justin for the lead. This was short lived as Mitchell ran wide on the right hander heading uphill. The top 4 were all battling for the lead. Justin, Mitchell, Cal & Matthew E Hill within a second of each other all making for good television. Matthew would eventually run wide on Turn 1 as it looked like he over committed for T1 and needed to straighten to minimize any time loss. This meant a short trip to the dirt costing him valuable seconds and dropping off the back of the pack.

Halfway through the race it was still tight at the front with Justin not making too much time on the front bunch. Daniel McKernan was running a solid 4th position until he ran wide and hit the tyre wall. He lost 4 places but after a quick pit stop he fight back to gain 2 spots to finish in a respectable 6th place.

At the front the race was starting to take shape and Justin  was setting conisistant times in the low 58's he began to stretch his lead to Mitchell and Mitchell started gapping Cal. This is how the race would finish with 1st place going to Justin Ruggier, in 2nd was Mitchell Abrahall and Cal Whatmore rounding out the top 3.

Phill Rockstroh and Robert Thomae are making huge improvements which is great to see and this is what this comp is all about.

Next week we are visiting Summit Point Raceway for Heat 4 of the Race To reality iRacing Competition.
