RESULTS - Monday Night's FINAL Mixed League 2012 race report!

Wednesday, December 26, 2012

The final round of the mixed championship combined the challenge of mastering formula one with devising clever pit strategies. With the absence of Ian Salteri and Ross Rizzo; Ben Haywood and Jason Brooks saw an opportunity to rise to the top of the standings. The wide Istanbul circuit in Turkey allowed plenty of opportunities for passing and tested driver bravery with right-front tyre-life with its exciting 4-apexed left-hander.

Race One – 10 Laps
Each race ran an intense qualifying shoot-out lap to determine the grid. Jason’s car was running on rails, sets pole with a 1:30.355 and runs off to an early lead. Rob Cooper was in the wars early. David Lord had an off track-excursion but recovers very well by lap two. Ben and Enda were fighting hard for second position until Enda got a little eager on the throttle though the slow-final corner sequence. Jason takes the win from Ben and hard-charging David.

Race Two – 20 laps
The first race gave drivers a bit more data to determine tyre choice and strategy for the longer races. Jason favoured the pace of the super softs, whereas the majority preferred endurance of the medium compound. Gab Wild and Enda came together early, to force both to limp back to the pits. David Lord ran into trouble lap 8 to force a retirement. Halfway through, and Jason pits for more tyres and rejoins in 2nd. He doesn’t take long to take back first from Ben who was preserving his tyres. Jason sets an impressive 1:29.878 and takes the win over Ben. Rory Boyd makes up the final spot on the podium followed a well-earned 4th from Rob.

Race 3 – 30 laps
Turn One starts a series of frustrating collisions for Gab Wild as he gets together with Dave. Jason also spins but keen to get back through the field, collecting Gab along the way. Ben finds the wall and race ending-damage, a rare DNF. Gab’s night and season ends after more contact with Rob this time. Rory Boyd leads the race but comes under heavy fire from Dave, Jason and Enda. Jason peels off on lap 10 and 20, just trailing David. Unfortunately, a drive through penalty shatters David’s chances. Jason takes the race by less than 5 seconds from another spectacular drive from Rory. Enda proves he can mix it up with the best by rounding out the podium.

Jason proved another hero could emerge by taking all three pole positions, race wins and fastest laps, well done! The mixed championship ensured a close championship up to the final round along with multiple different round winners. Ben Haywood proved that consistency was the championship winning strategy! He showed great improvement over the season, took out 2 overall round victories and never finished a round below 4th place! Congratulations Ben for taking the trophy and the “Golden Ticket” (automatic entry in the Race to Reality - where we put a sim racer into a real race car for the Aussie Cars Championship).

Well done guys - you all put in a massive effort, some tough competition and some great racing!

Looking forward to next season ...
