RESULTS: Golden Ticket Race "24hr GT3 @ Spa-Francorchamps"

Friday, September 06, 2013

The guys gathered to tackle 24hr race around Spa-Francorchamps in the GT3 class. Some guys turned up for some early laps as this was going to be a long race around the 7km circuit. The big question was what car to choose. You had the Mercedes SLS and the Corvette which had an extra 10km/h top speed down the straights but you  had the Ferrari’s and Lambo’s that where quicker with the handling down the back end of the circuit.

Qualifying:

A shortened (10 minute) qualifying session saw Palladino, Lord and Salteri take the top 3 places, with Goode the best of the Gold Coast in 4th, followed by Hamilton and Faull.

Race 1:

A relatively clean start sees Palladino leads Salteri and Lord into T1, and this lead pack builds a 3-second lead by the end of L1. By L3 the lead pack are still at it, being chased down by Faull in P4, Goode in P5, and Hamilton in P6.
Faull slips back a couple of places, passed by both Goode and Hamilton on L5. Cooper tours the infield on L6, but recovers with no damage and no positions lost. Goode runs off the track on L6, re-joining in P6. His tyres aren’t coping – will they last the distance?
By L10, the field is spreading out. Nobody has pitted for tyres yet – who will blink first? It’s Hemi, on L13.
Hamilton puts in a great L14, taking P3 and then P2 – but runs wide at T3 and loses P2. His tyres are definitely hurting now. Nursing it home, Hamilton takes advantage of a spin in front of him and claims P2, followed by Faull in P4, Goode in P5, Cooper in P7 and Hemi in P10.

Race 2:

Reverse Qualy Grid will  make the opening laps interesting as the fast guys charge through.
Hemi starts from P1, but doesn’t keep it long as Salteri charges to the front, reaching P2 by T3 and takes the lead by T4. L1 ends with Hamilton in P3, Faull in P4, Hemi in P5, Goode in P8, and Cooper in P10.
On L2, Bussittil runs wide at T6, losing positions to Faull (now in P2) and Hamilton (now in P3).
By L4, Faull has passed Hamilton for P2, Goode has climbed to P6, Cooper has advanced to P9, Hemi has slipped back to P10.
L8 sees Hamilton retake P2 from Faull.
L9 sees Lord overtaken by Goode, putting Goode into P5 before he pits for fresh tyres. Goode re-joins in P9.
On L10, Hamilton passes Palladino for the lead. Hamilton holds position until L12. Faull pits on L12 for new tyres, emerges in P7 in front of Goode.
Cooper pits for tyres on L13, he retains P9 when he re-joins.
L15 and Hamilton stays out one more time. Will his tyres last another lap? Goode hits the wall at T4, limps back to the pits with damage. He re-joins in P9.
Hamilton pits for rear tyres only on L17, emerges in P5 with just 2 laps to go.
L20 race finish sees Faull take P4, Hamilton takes P5, Cooper takes P8, Goode takes P9 and Hemi takes P10. Somehow Lord has managed to make his tyres last 20 laps – how does he do it?

Race 3:

The Sydney boys have decided they “need a challenge”, and have requested to start rear-of-grid for Race 3. Hemi has been gifted his second pole of the night, but has accidentally turned off his auto-clutch and stalled on the grid, causing a pile-up and a red flag. After the restart, everybody gets away cleanly, but then Hemi runs wide at T1 and gets collected by Robinson. Hemi is able to re-join the circuit but slips back to P9, while Robinson has damage and cannot continue. T4 sees more chaos, as Lord hits Salteri, who then hits Goode, spinning him into the sand trap. He is able to get out, but loses about 30 seconds to the rest of the field. The stewards will be busy with the post-race review on that one…
By L3, Faull has taken the lead, Cooper is holding P5.
Faull has slipped back to P3 by L7, while Hamilton is fighting hard to keep P5 from Cooper in P6. Goode is back up to P7 after his earlier tour of the sand, and Hemi is up to P8.
At T3 on L10, Salteri makes a spectacularly dangerous pass on Faull in an attempt to grab P3, but carts himself wide and cannot keep the spot.
The T3 sand trap gets a workout on L16 – first Goode, then Hemi all spin off. Goode loses valuable time and 2 positions.
L22 and its Lord out in front, followed by Palladino, Faull, Hamilton, Salteri, Cooper, Goode and Hemi. The order remains unchanged to the finish, but the post-race review of the T4 incident on L1 could change the results.
