RESULTS: Wednesday Night V8 League: Round 9 @ SMP - Eastern Creek NSW

Friday, August 22, 2014

Easter Creek now called Sydney Motorsport Park (SMP) is finally part of the V8 season and boy was it popular with the local boys. If Sydney had 14 seats we would have filled them tonight. Unfortunately a few missed out this round but the guys that got to race definitely put on a great show.

Qually:

With the popularity of the Eastern Creek round the guys were in to get some early practice. They worked hard to get the setup right in time for Qually. Chris Beresford was the first to smash out a time in the 1:26’s. He held that for a but David Lord showed his class by posting a 1:26.454 to take pole. Wade Keenan is struggling to back up his good form from last round as he is sitting in P7 with 1 min to go. The big surprise is newcomer Frank Papoustsis who will start the race from P4.

Race #1:

Chris Beresford got the good start into turn 2 but slightly lost it and crossed David Lords path causing him to turn in front of the oncoming field. This saw the Safety Car make its first appearance for the season. Once the safety car rolled back into the pits we were off again and Wade Keenen tries to make a move on Matt Pisani for P2 but almost takes them both out in the process. Mick Spiteri gets stuck in the gravel costing him a couple of spots. He is angry though as he puts the pressure on the back of Greg Gavalas. Beresford after that terrible start is fighting his way back through the field currently in P8. The rest of the field are now stretching out. As I say that there is a storm brewing for P4 with Enda Murphy, Iain McIntosh, Justin Wilson, Chris Beresford and Frank Papoutsis all tussling for the position. Kevin Maartenz is trying to hold out the charging Beresford to no avail and Spiteri has made a couple of more costly mistakes by running a bit too wide on a couple of turns. Matt Pisani has choked on the last corner of the last lap to eventually finish 4th promoting Wade Keenan and Chris Beresford into finishing 2nd and 3rd. David Lord keeping his nose clean out front takes the win.

Race #2:

Reverse grid and a good clean start from the boys. Spiteri gaining the most ground by holding the inside line around the first bend while the rest of the field washed over to the outside line. He is now in P3 from starting in P10. Ben Weeks has lost it but did well not to lose control in the dirt and re-join the track in front of the oncoming pack. Lord loses it in T2 in front of 5 hungry drivers happy to take his position at any cost. He loses a tonne of time and is now in P12. Again there is a battle for P4 between 6 cars. Up front however its Wade Keenan and Jayme Hemi in P1 & P2 with Beresford in 3rd. Championship leader is struggling down the back making too many mistakes trying to get back to the front. He is currently in P10 while Pisani has now advanced up into P2 ahead of Justin Wilson and Beresford back in P4. Wade Keenan is starting to struggle with the old tyres as the others are catching. They can sniff blood as Keenan is running into the dirt losing time. With only a couple of laps to go will he hold out?? Beresford and Wilson take advantage of Mick Spiteri being taken out by a back marker while in P3. They move up into P3 & P4. Last lap and Wade just can’t keep it on the track. This brings Pisani, Beresford and Wilson up a spot but on the final turn Pisani loses it again. It must start feeling like “Ground Hog Day” for him. Beresford and Wilson roll over the line to take the top 2 spots with Keenen recovering for 3rd.

Race #3:

Chris Beresford gets a great start off the line ahead of Lord and Keenan. Wilson is holding Murphy off as the both go down the main straight to complete Lap 1. Greg Gavalas makes the move on Pisani. Ben Weeks is off the back early while the 2 leaders are building a healthy buffer over Keenan who pits early on Lap 10. Justin Wilson and Frank Papoutsis move into P3 & P4 as a result. Murphy holding P5 ahead of Spiteri in P6. Iain McIntosh doing a solid job in P8 at the moment. He is just happy to stay out of trouble.

Lap 13 seems to be the number for all the pitstops as almost the entire field comes in for fresh rubber. Pisani spins twice as he tries to hold out a couple more laps before his pitstop. This has cost him valuable time as slips down to P10.

After all the pitstops are done Beresford and Keenan are in a battle for P2 as Lord has a handy 12 second lead. Further down the pack and Gavalas is holding Murphy and Spiteri off for P6. Frank Papoutsis currently doing a stella job sitting in P4 with a 6 second advantage. Unfortunately Keenan is forced to pit again from P3 on Lap 21 of 26. He manages to re-join the field in P6. But hang on…… he is rolling into the pits again ???? He must have been given a stop/go for getting caught speeding in pitlane? This has cost him another 3 spots to be in P9 and valuable championship points as well. Murphy and Spiteri have been together the entire race, they are now fighting for P4. Iain McIntosh can see Papoutsis in P4. He needs to gain 3 secs in 3 laps. Can he do it? He has Wade Keenan on his tail which distracted him too much.

The chequered flag flies as David Lord crosses the line 11 seconds ahead of Chris Beresford and Justin Wilson in 3rd a further 45 seconds back.
