RESULTS: Wednesday Night V8 League - Final Round @ Sydney Olympic Park NSW

Thursday, December 04, 2014

The final round of the V8 season and what harder track to finish on then the Sydney Olympic Park..or Homebush. Nothing but concrete here which is typical for a street circuit but none the less it is very intimidating for the drivers. As the passing opportunities were non-existent it was very important to nail the Qualifying.

Qualify:

Most of the guys were finding out where the run off areas were as they were over shooting most of the corners. They soon got that out of the way in the practice session and were keen to drill a perfect qually lap. A longer 15 minute session was on the schedule as we had a full field in and not much room to keep the clean air. Not many incidents as Chris Beresford posted in the first hotlap of the day posting a 1:22.291. V8 Veteran Matt Refalo showed that he still has the pace as he Q’d in 3rd with a 1:23.363 but it was the 2014 V8 Champ to take pole with a 1:21.944

Race #1

2nd time lucky as there was Turn 1 carnage. After the warning from the commisare the drivers repeated the carnage on the start/finish line. The field was let go and the worst effected was Mick Spiteri as he got caught up in the mess dropping back to last place after starting in P9. A lap later and Greg Gavalas ended up on his side and was sat there until he eventually rolled on his roof. Unfortunately later in the race he would find himself in the same position which cost him a lot of time. Meanwhile it was Chris Beresford out front with a 3 sec gap to David Lord who was starting to slip on old tyres while trying to stay ahead of Frank Papoutsis in 3rd. Lap 5 and  V8 vet Matt Refalo lost 4 spots when he spun coming out of the chicane. From the Gold Coast it was Iain McIntosh flying the flag with Daniel Oppedisano. Enda Murphy was busy holding off Refalo and Wade Keenan who was also suffering the punishing walls of Homebush. Mick Spiteri had cut through the field to finish up in 8th while out in front it was still Beresford who smashed it home with a 16 second lead over David Lord and Frank Papoutsis.

Race #2

This start was better although Matt Refalo spun again after Turn 1. The rest of the field managed to get through. Greg Gavalas is out in the lead in front of Enda Murphy and Daniel Oppedisano from the Gold Coast. Beresford is struggling to get through the field as he just moves into P5 ahead of Murphy under brakes into Turn 1. David Lord is up in P2 chasing down Greg Gavalas with a 6 second advantage. Refalo thought he would get the undercut by pitting early but he was slapped with a drive through penalty after his tardy pit stop, he re-joins in 11th. Gavalas is having the drive of his life as he has lead from the start holding a 7 second lead. A great drive from him. Rookie Steven Wright doing well in the top 10. With a lap to go Gavalas is struggling on the dead tyres and spins. Unfortunately this let David Lord through to take the chequered as Gavalas roles home in 2nd. Not deserved of his drive in the race. Wade Keenan is breathing down Oppedisano’s neck as they are in the fight for P3. It is Keenan who gets the position over the line and again on the last lap.

Race #3

Well this race brought out the safety car on the first lap. The field spent the next 3 wondering what position they need to be in for the restart. After the race got back under way it was Lord & Beresford dominating out front. This left Keenan, McIntosh and Oppedisano to battle it out for P3. Lap 10 seems to be the number for pit stops as almost the entire field is now rolling through the lane. David Lord however is treating it as a 2 stop strategy. To do this he needed to run some fast clean laps but unfortunately he spun coming out of the chicane and lost any advantage he might have had on his race plans. As he hit the wall he lost his front panel and in doing so lost all front downforce. A very important thing to have if you want to turn the sharp and aggressive 90 degree turns. With 6 laps to go he was going to struggle. With the car looking like it had just been the victim of a massive riot David did well to bring it home in 7th.  As David was out of the picture it was Beresford who claimed victory for the race and the round. Wade Keenan home in 2nd and Mick Spiteri with a well-deserved 3rd. Greg Gavalas rolled home with a credible 4th.
