RESULTS: Thursday Night F1 League: Round 11 @ Spa-Francorchamps

Tuesday, August 27, 2013

After a month off we all regrouped for round 11 of the Formula 1 championship at Spa Belgium. With practise underway and vehicles set- up was playing a big role at SPA due to the high speed sections and slow tight corners. The field was nice and close leading in to Qualifying.

Qualifying:

Andrew Trent was showing good pace and set a very quick 1:49.855 on his 3rd lap out in qually. With the rest of the field chasing he held Pole Position for the remainder of the session, the rest of the field was just under a second behind with Scott Daniels next on the grid with a 1:50.768. Jason Brooks new to the F1 League was seating in 3rd on a 1:50.979 which he posted late in the session. He was struggling to get his car set up right but managed to pull it together.

The Race:

With everyone on the grid and keen to get underway the lights went out and the cars were released with every one away clean it was a test as to who would take turn 1. Evan Golbach spins coming out of turn one and the field take off in to the distance with Trent leading the way followed by Brooks and Hagen Bahnemann. With one lap down Brooks and Bahnemann fight for 2nd and 3rd with Daniels holding on to 4th place as he watches the battle just in front of him. Brooks outbreaks himself end of lap 2 and runs a little bit wide and now finds himself in a battle for 3rd and 4th with Daniels. Lap 4 and Brooks and Daniels are still at it but Daniels spins in the high speed S section and Brooks gets some breathing room. On lap 4 Trent is first to pit handing the lead to Bahnemann, next to pit was Daniels and Matthew Hill on lap 5. Bahnemann pits lap 5 to hand the lead back to Trent with Golbach and Brooks pitting on lap 6.

The fight for the lead is now between Trent and Bahnemann. Another battle carries on with neither driver giving an inch between Brooks and Daniels for 3rd and 4th. Bahnemann pits on lap 10 followed by Daniels. With Trent coming in for tyres on lap 12 Brooks stays out and takes first place. With all the drivers pushing hard a pattern seems to be rising with tyres not lasting long. Trent is driving the wheels off his car trying to catch Brooks out in front. As tyres wear off quick a couple of the guys push a bit too hard and spin. the next round of stops sees Daniels dive in on lap 17 followed by Bahnemann. Brooks on pits on lap 18 and puts Trent back in the lead with Golbach now in 2nd. Trent coming out of the pits is a bit too keen in getting back to pace and is caught speeding in pit lane and is slapped with a stop/go penalty which he takes on lap 20. Daniels is out in front and driving very smooth to try and save his tyres with Trent now back on track after serving his stop/go. he is pushing hard and lapping 1 sec quicker than everyone else in the field. Daniels has to give in and pit on lap 23 but locks up on pit entry and is caught speeding and he is the 2nd driver of the night to get a stop/go penalty. Brooks back in the lead and Trent still pushing hard to catch him, he spins on lap 23 and slides into the wall at over 200kph. He recovers and stays out with a bit a damage to the car. Golbach, Bahnemann and Daniels last pitting on lap 25. The fight for 2nd and 3rd is between Golbach and Daniels with Golbach spinning out, Daniels pitting on lap 29 sees him re-join in 4th. Bahnemann catches Golbach after his spin and now they dual for 2nd and 3rd. Five laps left and Brooks holds the lead with 19 sec gap over 2nd but the question is will his tyres last the distance. On the start of lap 31 Bahnemann makes a mistake and comes into the pits for tyres and drops to P5. Golbcah now given space pushes on in P2 while Daniel holds 3rd. A late charge from Trent but to no avail as Jason Brooks crosses the line in first with a fantastic drive and only stopping twice for tyres. Evan Golbach in 2nd followed by Scott Daniels, Andrew Trent , Hagen Bahnemann and Matthew Hill.

With round 11 run and won by J Brooks in his first outing in Formula 1 the field holds it breath for the next round at MONZA, ITALY .
