RESULTS: Thursday Night F1 League: Round 1 @ Australian GP

Friday, March 13, 2015

The 2015 F1 season kicked off at the challenging street circuit in Melbourne. The changes to the format and cars meant that all the drivers were on a steep learning curve.

Practice got underway and the reigning 2014 F1 Champion Scott Daniels showed he meant business this season leading the lap times for most of the session until Shane Gilfeather putting in a flaming lap. 2015 new comer Jaycie Richards was able to top the time sheet after practice. Adam Gill, Michael Donnellan, Jacob Rankin, Murray Conallin, John Goodacre and Geoff Brown all put in some good practice laps.

Qualify:

Qualify got underway under the new format. This saw a closed 5min session so it was all or nothing the boys as they barely had time to get the tyres warmed. Some failing to post a good lap as they only managed 2 hot laps and 1 mistake could see them start the opening race from the back of the pack which is what happened to Scott Daniels.

Race:

The race got underway, Shane lead the field followed by Michael and Jaycie, Scott had a cracking start jumping from 9th to 4th within the first few corners.

By Lap 3 the race started to settle into a groove. Shane in 1st with Jaycie now only 0.5sec off his rear wing. Scott held 3rd From Adam. Michael and Murray were putting in come consistent laps. Jacob, Geoff and Jason rounded out the field. The end of lap 4 saw Jaycie make a little mistake and as a result spun dropping him back down the field that allowed Scott and Adam to move up a position. However he was able to compose himself and move back into 3rd. Unfortunately Jaycie found the wall as his tyres went off. The rookie had to limp around the rest of the lap for fresh rubber. This allowed Shane and Scott to get away at the front of the field and Adam was in a comfortable 3rd place.

Lap 11 saw Scott in first place but it was short lived as Shane retook the number 1 position. Lap 18 saw Shane dive into the pits and Scott was able to take P1 back once again. Shane exited just behind Murray and it held him up slightly and Scott capitalised by putting in his flaming lap, posting the fastest lap with a 1.32.051. Further down the field Adam was consistent as always and held a firm third place. Michael in 4th, Murray in 5th Geoff in 6th Jason in 7th Jacob in 8th and Jaycie was in 9th. He was back on the pace and closing rapidly on Jacob. Lap 20 saw Scott dive into the pits and this gave Shane the lead. Pit strategy certainly was going to play a role in the final outcome. Lap 28 saw Jacob and Geoff both suffer mechanical gremlins that ended their races early. With 3 laps to go Shane was in P1 Scott was giving it everything again on another fastest lap of the race with a 1.31.098 and only 2.5 secs behind Shane, This race was going to go down to the wire. Shane on the 2nd last lap finally cracked under the pressure from the reigning champion and coming out of turn 1 ran slightly wide and lost the rear end handing the lead and the race to Scott Daniels.

Final placing were

1st Scott Daniels - Reigning champion and putting the field on notice. A great race starting at the back of the grid.

2nd Shane Gilfeather - A cracking race but 1 slight error proved costly

3rd Adam Gill - Mr Consistency held a firm 3rd all race and picked up valuable championship points

4th Michael Donnellan - A good consistent race and has shown he will be competitive this year.

5th Murray Conallin - Not the greatest starts of the season for him however did bag some valuable points and we will certainly see him higher in the rankings throughout the year.

6th Jaycie Richards - A very impressive new comer that had some tyre issues and will certainly be contesting for race wins all season.

7th Jason Goodacre - A solid first showing and will only improve.

8th Geoff Brown – DQ (not serving penalty in time)

9th Jacob Rankin - DNF

Everyone now a little more familiar with the changes we head to Malaysia in 2 weeks it is certainly going to be a cracking race.
