RESULTS: Monday Night GT3 League 2014 - Round 6 @ Nurburgring-Nordschleife 24hr

Thursday, July 10, 2014

Nurburgring – Nordschleife - The Green Hell - The infamous proving ground of driver and car. You know the one. The one too dangerous for Formula One, yet some crazy GT drivers are still willing to take up the challenge, not to mention for a full 24 hours. It is no surprise that Racecentre managed to attract the best drivers in our Queensland store versus a full house in Sydney, albeit in a two hour, time-scaled version.

Qualifying:

A 10-minute qualifying session would take place on the Grand Prix layout to ensure drivers would actually manage a complete lap. David Lord, out of the box, delivered a benchmark 2:02.5 in a Ferrari 458. Interestingly, he switched to a backup Nissan GTR, effectively aborting his lap. Ross Rizzo, only 0.1s down on David’s time sets a provisional pole time. David’s backup GTR shaved 0.3s of his earlier time. Chris Paras sipped his can of Red Bull, biding his time whilst rubber was laid onto the track for his one flying lap. Late in the session though, Jason Brooks banged out a 2:01.3 for the top spot.

Race:

With the grid set, we would have assumed that the drivers would play it safe for the long race ahead. Fortunately, we were proved wrong and were treated to some entertaining racing! Allan Marks threw his BMW Z4 down the inside of turn one, and clipped Francarlo Rizzo, ruffling some feathers. Francarlo seemingly got his payback later that lap, sending Allan into a wall and into a slow recovery. The bottom hairpin of the GP circuit caught some of the best drivers out on cold tyres including both David and Shane Gilfeather. Tim Calvert was the first casualty of the treacherous barriers on the extended circuit, flipping over the barriers and requiring the fans to push him back onto the track. Jason clocked his first lap at 9:07 almost 5 seconds up on Ross and Pat O’Rielly within eye sight. Chris, with a smart drive, avoided carnage to complete the first lap in 6th. Chris eventually spun but Shane chooses to ignore the local caution and fences it in avoidance.

Ross and Jason both record 9:01’s – impressive considering the length of lap and it set the scene for a classic battle. Pat, Francarlo and Tim Hamilton diced for 3rd in that order respectively. Pat ran through a gravel trap, followed by Francarlo and Tim Hamilton slipped past both. Ecstatic on a double overtake, Tim Hamilton spun half a lap later, unfortunately slow to recover and relinquished his spots. David seemed to struggle a bit on this circuit but still provided an entertaining fight with Shane. Chris chose to pit after lap 3, a safe move considering his opponents were sliding around on abused tyres. Allan’s choice of car seemed to give him an extra lap on tyres compared to his competitors, perhaps a major advantage. Unlucky Pat’s tyres did not last, although lucky enough that they blew on the final corners of the lap. To his surprise, Shane played the Good Samaritan and provided a much needed push back to pit lane. Pit stops provided the means for Ross and Jason to swap positions a few times.

At only two laps to go, the advantage was with Ross only 10 seconds over Jason. A spirited drive by Jason managed to reduce the gap to 5 seconds within a lap. However, as expected with an aggressive push, so does the risk of mistakes. Those mistakes eventuated into a 30 second lead for Ross but also a well-deserved victory! Francarlo took the final podium spot over Tim Hamilton. Allan on his way to a 5th-place, fell devastatingly short on tyres by only one corner. Nathan Tregarthen, showing no mercy, drove past the stranded car for a last corner pass.
