RESULTS: Monday Night DTM League 2015 - Round 3 @ Norisring

Friday, June 26, 2015

Round 3 of the 2015 Racecentre DTM league took us to Norisring, a high speed street circuit with a challenging chicane and hairpin. Current  professional racing driver and TV personality Grant Denyer made his Racecentre league debut.

Race 1:

The tight unforgiving nature of the street circuit proved to be challenging for the drivers, with many drivers made contact in the tight hairpin of T1. The Rizzo brothers got through the first turn cleanly, and Francarlo remained untouchable for the rest of the race. Jaycie Richards however, missed his braking point into the corner and fell to the back of the field.

Grant Denyer showed his skills by making up two positions on lap 1. He gained another position later that lap when Ross Rizzo spun out of the first turn. Pat O’Reilly made contact with Shane Gilfeather into the chicane as O’Reilly attempted an overtake manoeuvre. The contact led to Gilfeather losing control of his car, but Pat O’Reilly did the gentleman thing and gave the position back. After Ross Rizzo’s first lap mishap, he charged through the field and was less than a second behind second placed man Grant Denyer. With a late apex move out of the last turn, Denyer and R. Rizzo was side by side out of the first turn with a drag race to the finish line. Ross ultimately beat Denyer to the finish line by .04 seconds for P2, while Denyer finished an amazing P3 in his first DTM league race.

Race 2:

With a reverse grid based on qualifying position, race 2 proved to be an exciting race with battles all through the grid. As lights went green, Naumovski made the best start with a late braking move into the first turn to steal P1. Pole sitter Brad Martin had a little too much wheel spin off the line, but held P3 coming out of turn 1. Grant Denyer and Pat O’Reilly lost out the most to the chaos at turn 1, dropping to the back of the field.

Herringe was all over the gearbox of Naumovski for the first three laps, and ultimately got passed Naumovski into the chicane on lap 3 to take the lead. By the end of lap 13, the leaders were separated by less than a second, with Francarlo Rizzo in the lead and Jaycie Richards and Chris Herringe following closely. Unfortunately for Herringe, he made an error into turn 1 on the last lap, this allowed Ross Rizzo to claim the last spot of the podium.

Race 3:

Pole sitter Brad Martin again struggled with wheel spin off the line and fell to the mid-field by turn 1. With a late braking manoeuvre into the first turn, Chris Herringe took P1 but quickly lost the position to Michael Donnellan by the end of the lap. Herringe was then under pressure from Jaycie Richards, but Richards was unable to make his move stick into turn 1. This gave Herring some breathing room to attack Donnellan into the chicane. A late braking gone wrong from Chris Herringe meant that Donnellan was hit from the back and spun. This damaged Donnellan car’s rear suspension, and ultimately ended his chances of a podium.

Pat O’Reilly and Grant Denyer made the most out of the turn 1 mayhem to make up for race 2. The pair was P3 and P4 by lap 5 respectively. Ross Rizzo spun on lap 6 and dropped back to P8, but he was determined to make up for lost positions. Shane Gilfeather put up a great defence against Ross Rizzo, but Ross eventually got past and ended up P5 for the race. Jaycie Richards came home first, with Chris Herringe followed closely by Pat O’Reilly to complete the podium.

Race 4:

With lesson learnt from the previous three races, everyone got off the line cleanly this time around. By lap 5, Francarlo Rizzo was leading with Herringe and O’Reilly completing the top 3. Ross Rizzo was unable to make up grounds in the first few laps. He therefore decided to be the first to pit on lap 6 to take full advantage of the clean air.

Francarlo opened up a big lead up front, with a gap of over 13 seconds to second placed Shane Gilfeather. Francarlo pitted on lap 13, promoting Shane to the lead. Shane responded by pitting the next lap, and rejoined the race in P6. Lap 16, Brad Martin was starting to struggle with his brakes. Pat O’Reilly took advantage of it and outbraked Martin into the chicane and took P3. The Rizzo brothers ultimately took home 1-2 with Francarlo winning and Ross holding P2 not too far behind. Pat O’Reilly took P3, with Chris Herringe and Shane Gilfeather closely behind.

Race 5:

By race 5 the drivers have learnt the tricky characteristic of turn 1, and all of them got away cleanly with Chris Naumovski in the lead. Jaycie Richards overtook Chris Naumovski on the outside of turn 4 on lap 2. Naumovski’s fortunate continues to worsen, with a bad lap on lap 4 demoting him further to P4 behind Shane Gilfeather and Ross Rizzo respectively.

At the back of the pack, Chris Herringe and Donnellan continued the fight they had in Race 3. Herringe made a mistake out of the last turn on lap 6 and spun. He then opted to pit for new tyres to change his strategy.

The rest of the field was relatively spread out as they all ran their own strategy. In the end Ross Rizzo took home his first victory of the night, with his brother Francarlo Rizzo just 4 seconds behind him to finish second. Pat O’Reilly ended his night with a strong P3 finish for the last step of the podium.
