RESULTS: Monday Mixed League Championship: Round 6 Ferrari F430 - Fixed @ Spa Franchorchamps

Wednesday, June 26, 2013

This week, a drivers favourite – the beautiful and flowing Spa-Franchorchamps. The equally matched Ferrari F430 required a fixed setup and driver skill only to determine the winner. The main challenge was finding a balance between speed and rear tyre degradation. With the absence of the Rizzo brothers it was good to see Bobby Leprem return to competition racing, representing the Gold Coast store.

Qualifying

Despite fixed setup, we witnessed two distinct groups of qualifiers – in the low and the high two:twenties. Most notably, Jason Brooks stepped up to the big boy’s group. By the halfway point, Palladino looked confident with his 2:20.8 lap and chose to sit the remainder out in order to “refresh”.

Race One – 7 laps

There was minimal contact into the tight turn one hairpin as they head their way up to Eau Rouge for the first time. Palladino led David Lord and Jason early, after quick man Salteri dropped back slightly. A super tight battle formed between Enda Murphy, Nathan Tregarthen and Jason Brooks. It was one of attrition; Salteri, Brooks, and Tregarthen all endure individual spins. Mr mature Murphy managed to climb to position 3. With only a couple laps to go, Brooks, headlights and all, pressures him to steal it back. Palladino win over Lord.

Race Two – 10 laps

Reverse grid - Leprem was surprised when he ended up on his roof before the first corner! After a quick push by the virtual marshals, we were all set for a race restart. A spectacular restart saw the guys running at least 4 wide out of turn one! Cool heads prevailed and would be required to tackle the longer race. Salteri once again runs into trouble but calls it quits at the halfway point. Palladino takes another win, Brooks in second and Lord in third.

Race Three – 15 laps

Sam Owen just nips the inside wall on the start, but the starting grid remained relatively unchanged down the order. That’s not to say the battle wasn’t intense, especially between Brooks and Lord. At lap 8 it was a mad, pit lane scramble for fresh tyres. Only Bobby stayed out, but proved just how difficult it is to manage tyres after the fall off the proverbial cliff. Tregarthen  managed to take P3 off Lord at one point, but dropped a couple of positions on lap 11. David peeled into the pits for a second stop and once again made a charge through the field.
Once again, Michael Palladino was unchallenged out-front, leading home Jason and David.

This round saw a big shake up in the Championship table and with only 2 rounds to go who is going to finish on top with the "Golden Ticket"
