RESULTS: Wednesday Night V8 League: Round 2 @ Symmons Plains Tasmania

Friday, April 05, 2013

We always look forward to the trip across that Tasman as we head to the tight twisty tassie track more commonly known as Symmons Plains. With not many overtaking opportunities here Qualifying was going to be the key. Some team trucks arrived early so they could hit the track and work on their setups. With a good practice session out of the way it was time to Qualify.

Qualify:

A quick 10 min session for Qualify and everyone hit the track simultaneously. Micheal Palladino and Iain Salteri out first to get some clean track. They would set the standard with late 48 sec time but the King of Qualify, David Lord silenced the lambs with a blistering 48:496 lap. He later said "That felt really good, I don't think i can repeat that time. I'm not expecting to hold that time through the race but qualifying up the front here is very important"

1.David Lord   2.Michael Palladino   3.Iain Salteri

Race #1:

Green,Green,Green !!!! and it's Michael Palladino 1st into Turn 1 with Iain Salteri close behind and David Lord losing time due to an early tap in the back causing him to spin. Rob Cooper also spins a couple of laps later but recovers well.Matt Refalo was holding firm in 3rd until Nigel Faull made a move and overtook on Lap 4. The top 4 now is now all within 4 seconds of each other and lapping consistently. After his early spin pole sitter, David Lord is now making his was way back through the pack. In the midfield the battle between Michaael Gray and Tim Hamilton is heating up as they are racing bumper to bumper meanwhile Nigel Faull is putting the pressure on Iain Salteri. Paul Robinson was the 1st to pit for new tyres on Lap 9 and he was soon followed by Michael Gray, Palladino and the King of Qually a lap later. While this is all happening Mr Tim "Real Men Dont Need Pitstops" Hamilton had gained 4 positions which saw him now in P1. He managed to finish that way way with a 12 second lead. Unfortunately Jarryd Busuttil failed to serve a Drive Through and was disqualified from the race on Lap 14.

1st Tim Hamilton 2nd Michael Palladino 3rd Iain Salteri.

Race #2:

Reverse grid had everyone cringing as this track is not overtaking friendly. The green flag dropped again for a 30 lapper and Jamie Hemi did really well to hold off David Lord for the first lap. David was on a charge and keen to take advantage of the reverse grid after his poor result in race 1.Starting in P12 and moving up to P3 after 3 laps,Iain Salteri took no prisoners while making his way to the front. On lap 5 Michael Palladino made an uncharacteristic mistake and spun on the hairpin right in-front of Rob Coopper and Paul Robinson. This allowed Iain Salteri to stretch his lead to a comfortable 5 sec buffer. Iain made his first pitstop on lap 14 and rejoined the field in P3.

Up the front saw a 3 way battle between Michael Gray,Palladino and Tim Hamilton all swapping turns while Nigel Faull was just sitting 1 second back hoping for one of them to make a mistake. This was not to be as Palladino would start to stretch to a 2 second gap. With 4 to go Matt Refalo gains a position as Michael Gray reluctantly pits for a fresh set of tyres. Back in the pack Enda Murphy and Paul Robinson would be in a good tough scrap until they both gave way to Nigel Faull. This was on the straight leading into the hairpin and unfortunately Nigel carried too much speed in and threw the car into the wall sideways. Nigel then nursed the car home in an impressive 2nd position with Iain Salteri taking the win and Tim Hamilton 3rd.

Race #3:

this was a tough start. It looked more like the dodgem cars at your local carnival. Iain leading the way with Palladino right behind.  Rob Cooper doing well for the GC in P5 but Qually King is keen to get passed and chase down the top 4 who are only seperated by 3 seconds. Changing his title from Qually King to Spin King David Lord had turned the car on a few occasions relegating him to P12. Meanwhile Palladino got a good run out of the hairpin and it was he and Salteri side by side down the back straight. Palladino on the inside had the better run into the left hander and Iain spun mid turn. Iain thought that this was a good moment to pit for tyres but on entry he saw that Jarryd was already in their. This cost him valuable time and he rejoined the field in P7 and a lap down from the current leaders,Gold Coasts Hamilton, Faull and Michael Goode. At this point Salteri is seeing red and smashes out the lap record of 48:841 seconds. That was a full second ahead of any rival.

Matt Refalo in P2 was on old tyres when he locked up on his pit entry and smashes into the tyre wall costing him seconds and a drive through penalty.

Ten laps to go and it was Michael Gray in front by a second of Tim Hamilton before he makes his final pitstop. As he he rejoins he gets stuck in lapped traffic. With only 1 pitstop Hamilton and Faull from the Gold Coast are doing well to be in P1 & P2 with 5 to go. Will they hold out ????? On the 2nd last lap Hamilton had a scare as Palladino spun in front of him coming out of the hairpin but he would stand firm to take a well deserved win with Nigel Faull 2nd and Michael Gray taking 3rd.

Another trip across the Tasman next week as we head to Pukekohe, new Zealand....
